Southeast Prepares for Hurricane Florence
The Southeast prepares for hurricane Florence to make landfall with catastrophic damage.
Florence Destined for Landfall
Hurricane Florence is predicted to make landfall late Thursday evening to very early Friday morning. South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia are in the direct path.
The
National Weather Service released a Hurricane Florence Public Advisory at 2:00 PM Eastern time 9/11/2018. "Florence is getting better organized and increasing in size". "Life threatening storm surge is possible along the coasts of North and South Carolina" introduced the advisory. Florence is a Category 4 hurricane with sustained speeds of 130 mph and higher wind speed gusts. Hurricane force winds have expanded outward and are 95 miles from the center. Tropical force winds now extend 170 miles from the center. Maximum storm surge of 12 feet with 15 to 20 inches of rain is predicted for areas hit by the full strength of storm. The storm wind speeds could increase.
The Weather Channel reports that Naval ships in Virginia began leaving port for open sea to avoid the hurricane. The Carolinas have issued mandatory evacuation orders. From Columbia, South Carolina to Charleston, South Carolina Interstate 26 is west bound only on all four lanes. Consumers are stocking up on gasoline, bottled water, propane, batteries, and canned goods in anticipation of outages. Hospitals in the direct path of the hurricane began to transport patients to other healthcare facilities.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is monitoring hurricane Florence progress. For more information go to

The President has approved North and South Carolina for Federal Disaster Funds in advance of the storm. Utility companies are gearing up for destruction to the electrical grid. Neighboring states are sending repair crews to support needed repairs. It is estimated that areas could lose power for two weeks or more.
When Power Fails
It is not an IF but WHEN the power fails, what is the plan? If this storm hits as predicted, the electrical infrastructure will suffer devastating damage. Many locations will not have utility power for extended amounts of time. Once the hurricane passes, rains stop, and flood water recede, power is not typically restored. Damage to the infrastructure dictates the time of loss of power.
Many folks are preparing for a life without power. Some have small portable generators that can power essentials such as refrigerators, freezers and communications. The ability to establish electricity in an area affected by a natural disaster is an integral part of habitability.
