Onsite Energy Facts
MTU Onsite Energy is a core brand of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. Rolls-Royce is a leading provider for high and medium speed diesel and natural gas engines and drive systems.
MTU boasts over 60 years of experience in power generation systems backed with over 100 years in the engine business. Daimler-Benz and MAN AG founded MTU companies on July 11, 1969. MTU stands for Motoren-und Turbinen-Union (Engine and Turbine Union). MTU assumed responsibility for engines ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 hp.
In September 1994, MTU and Detroit Diesel Corporation entered into a cooperation. Detroit Diesel was founded by General Motors in 1938. At that time a GM Diesel Division existed. In 1970 Detroit Diesel merged with the engine gas-turbine division of Allison Division. Prior to the cooperation, Detroit Diesel was a leading diesel engine supplier in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The joint product between MTU and Detroit Diesel turned the company into a leading international manufacturer of engines and systems for a wide range of products including power generators.
Design and Manufacturing Values
MTU offers standard products, engineering, and technology. Their products deliver quality and performance and are consistently enhanced to match the needs of the power generation market. Their four values are:
- Power - Global providers of high performance, diesel and natural gas generators
- Solutions - Custom-made solutions for a turn-key system
- Innovation - Setting the standards for power generation systems constructed with the highest technological level
- Sustainability - Taking responsibility for tomorrow's needs with innovative solutions
Advantages of Diesel Engines
Diesel engines are highly efficient with low operating costs. Long maintenance intervals and fuel optimized operations contribute to cost reduction. Engines supply power for the entire line of generators, from 249 to 3,490 kW.
The diesel engines and the alternators they drive provide clients with emergency (stand-by), prime and continuous power globally. Hospitals, data centers, airports, office complexes, shopping centers, industrial facilities and public utilities are some common industries that use MTU power generators.
Power Generation Units
MTU Onsite Power manufacturers a variety of generator styles in a multiple of models. The Power Module series offers an all-in-one design in a sound attenuated enclosure. The design houses engine, alternator, cooling, exhaust, fuel tanks and generator control system. It connects directly to facility or site grid and is ready to supply power. Large enclosure doors allow for easy access for running checks and maintenance.
Portable Power Modules are also manufactured. These units feature a 5th-wheel connection design for ease of towing from site to site. Portable units have the same all-in-one design in a sound attenuated enclosure.
Some facilities and industries require the power generator location to be inside the building. MTU offers a line of generators to accommodate these needs. The power generator is a complete system mounted on a skid. However, it does require fuel and exhaust connection from the building. Because of the hard-piped connections these are often termed permanent installations.
