Difference Between an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and Switchgear

Switching and DistributionAn automatic transfer switch (ATS) and switchgear are the two most common pieces of technology used to switch a power load from one source to another. When there is a power failure, an ATS automatically commands a backup power generator to start, and when power is restored, the ATS automatically commands the generator to shut down. Switchgear is slightly different from an ATS. Understanding the differences between these two types of switches is critical because every facility has different needs in emergency power situations.
