Continuous, Prime, and Standby Generators

Generators are designed to provide power in one of three modes of operation: continuous, prime, or standby.  Continuous or prime generators are designed to be the main power source and provide electricity over prolonged periods of time.  Standby generators are to provide power when the utility grid fails or when the main power supply is interrupted.  These distinctly different power supply scenarios require the generator to be designed differently to withstand the rigors of each. It is important to evaluate the application of the generator to determine what type of generator is best suited.  The following article explains in detail the differences between the design and operation of standby emergency generators and generators used for a prime or continuous source of power. 
 
Generators can be used for continuous power supply, extended periods of time, or as a standby/backup power option.  Always consult a professional to see which type of generator is right for you.
